It's the big question. Why? Why am I the way that I am? And why have I felt so locked in for so long? The stats tell us everything.
On the surface, 95% of us know why we want to dress. A whopping 85% sit on the spectrum of simply wanting to feel more feminine, and that act drives us wild sexually. I know it does for me. Slipping into my feminine is intoxicating as any drug. It’s a stat we cannot ignore.  Â
Less than 10% of us go out in public dressed regularly with nearly 75 having done it once or twice or never. This flies in the face of younger generations where culturally we have accepted gender fluidity and expression – anything goes now and no-one notices.
For us, the majority of us seem to feel, I suspect, trapped and frustrated. An emotion clearly expressed in the next chart. Â Â
And there it is. We want to be out. We want to be seen. We want to be free.Â
A cheeky question designed to reveal the emotional thrill of what could be mundane for some, and the adventure of a lifetime for others. Only 11% of us are so relaxed we don’t think about clothes shopping where 68% find the idea of shopping with a girlfriend exciting. I am in that camp too. It never ever gets old.   Â
Voices from the survey
Why we crossdress
‘It makes me feel like a woman. When I was younger, it was from some unknown curiosity to feel like a girl. Then sexual arousal. Then stress relief. Then a safe place. Now because I feel like myself.’
Danielle
‘Honestly I don’t know, but after 42 years it’s not going back in the box. All I know is I’ve stopped fighting the girl.’
Kimberley Hills
‘Part of it is sexual for me, but as the years have gone on it’s become more and more a part of who I am. I can’t imagine living without it now.’
Evie
‘It’s a very hard thing to unpack. It feels right. I feel more confident, more myself. I’ve worn panties under men’s clothes on days I needed to have hard emotional conversations. It helps.’
Vanessa Nines
‘It’s the only time I ever feel like I’m me. The only time when I’m truly happy.’
Chrissy
What it feels like
‘It makes me feel alive, every bone and every pore of my body.’
Sophiarauss
‘It makes me look how I feel.’
Brandi
‘It’s empowering to feel hot as the opposite gender. It’s like I’m a shapeshifter or costume artist pulling off what should be a drastic change in presentation.’
Julia
‘I just love the feel of the fabrics, especially hosiery against freshly shaved and moisturised skin, and how heels change the way I walk.’
Sissy Nancy
‘It’s the only time in my life when I feel attractive. I also tend to feel complete when I am dressed.’
Lola
Dressing in public
‘I love going out into the world as Jasmine. I feel more comfortable as a female than a male. If possible I would love to be Jasmine 24/7.’
Jasmine
‘I have never gone out in public in a dress or with wig and makeup, but I do go out in women’s clothing very often — just more neutral, like sweaters and jeans, with bra and panties and even stockings beneath.’
Jillyanne
‘I want to be a woman full time and would love to dress more in public. Every time I do get to dress now, I go out in public.’
Lauren
‘Stockings, it has to be stockings, and some hot lingerie under an outfit, unseen by others, but you know it’s there.’
Jennifer.m
‘I love to go out in public and just be myself in public, as a girl.’
Kelvin
The fear of it
‘I’m too scared to go out in public crossdressing right now, but to have someone there with me, to motivate me to push my boundaries, would mean a lot.’
Anna
‘Not so confident. Scared of how everyone will treat me.’
Meera
‘I’ve never presented in public. This would be such an amazing experience. But I’m not sure I’d ever have the courage.’
Brittany
‘I never went out in public crossdressed, because of my fear. But I don’t know, if I get the chance, maybe.’
Shashi
‘It makes me feel more like me, and that boosts my confidence, after I get over my initial fear of going out in public.’ — Nithlyvia
The thrill of being in the world
‘Being out in public, dressed in stockings and girlie, is a serious rush for me.’
Ashlea
‘I just love the feeling of beautiful feminine clothes against my skin, and the thrill of stepping out en femme.’ — Jennifer
‘It’s the thrill of it, and I find all the outfits hot. I also find it risky to walk outside in high heels and dressed up.’ — Carrie
‘It would feel really good, expressive — the thrill of breaking social boundaries.’
Rani
‘My fantasy is simple: to walk down the street and attract zero attention, to the point that I relax and forget that I’m dressed.’
Helen
Shopping for clothes
‘I love this experience. It’s so thrilling, especially when the checkout girl, and it’s usually a girl, cottons on. Every so often I get that knowing smile. So delicious.’
Jenny Raven
‘I don’t really need a shopping partner. When I shop alone I used to get nervous. Now I figure I’m just shopping, so no harm!’
Veronica_L
‘I have never been shopping with another girl, but I think even though I’d be scared and nervous, it would be fine.’
Kim
‘I just want to have fun out with a girlfriend while dressed. Go shopping. Have a drink.’
Maddie
‘Dressing and spending time with a real sexy girl would be great — having girly time, going out for shopping, dinner… unimaginable.’
