Do You Remember Readers Wives Magazine? Welcome to Readers Lives On My Podcast

About Readers Lives

I’ve decided to start a new subset of my podcast called ‘Reader’s Lives’, which is a riff on the magazines that girls of my generation would recognize from the 80s and 90s called ‘Reader’s Wives’. These particularly lurid magazines of that era were top-shelf material and required Indiana Jones style adventures to acquire for any boy under the age of 18.

Reader’s Wives was a magazine that purported to feature photo shoots with the partners of their male readers, but I suspect in reality they were all models or sex workers. I’ve just done a deep dive into the ‘dirty magazines from that innocent ‘porn era as it was such a formative part of my sexuality as a young boy. Looking at the articles and photos, I’ve come to realize that they played a bigger part in the formation of my erotic psyche than I anticipated.

Because of UK law at the time, it was illegal to show a male erection, and in order to placate some sense of morality and taste (or news agents would not sell the magazines), actual penetrative or even simulated sex was never really shown.

It was always girls in lingerie or uniforms, slowly undressing and posing. Simulated acts like masturbation or playing with toys were also banned. It was always ‘hands off’, and while girls could appear together, there was never any girl on girl action. Just girl kinda next to girl.

Magazine cover titled "Readers Wives Special" featuring women in lingerie posing. Text reads, "Real Women For Real Men! Accept No Substitute!" Price marked as £2.50.

I suspect that my sexuality formed around gazing upon beautiful women wearing gorgeous lingerie, and I then projected that image on myself. It’s still reflected in the porn that I consume now, and even the stories that I write. Almost all porn becomes uninteresting to me about 25% of the way in. The moment it gets too gynaecological, I’m usually checked out. I want to see femininity, eyes, eye contact, lipstick, nails, lingerie, nylon, stockings, lace, eye contact, did I mention eye contact? I wanted intimacy and an overwhelming feeling of being drenched in femininity.

So magazines like ‘Men Only’ and ‘Club’ (which featured women in lingerie), just one of a handful of magazines I would buy as a teen and hide under the bed, became my way to explore my sexuality. My American girlfriends of course, will have had no such limitations as hardcore pornography has been available in the States for decades, and I think you can see that reflected in the material that they create and the culture surrounding it even now.

Anyway, this was all an unexpected blog post about a new subset of my podcast called ‘Reader’s Lives’, that’s dedicated to girls like me who’ve also read my books, where we can have a discussion about their lives, their loves, their fantasies, their passions, their favourite clothes, their naughtiest experiences, their heartbreaks, their tragedies, their triumphs, and any advice they can offer other girls. The first episode is out now with Katie Gardner and I do hope that you enjoy it.

Do you remember these magazines? Which were your favourites?
